What to bring on a Phang Nga Bay canoe tour

A small, well-packed day bag is easier to manage than a large backpack on a canoe trip. For Twilight Sea Canoe’s Evening Glow tour, plan for hotel transfers, time aboard the main boat, guided canoe outings, a possible swim and an evening on the bay. Wear clothes that can get wet, bring secure footwear and keep a dry change for later. The guide below explains what to pack and what you can leave at your hotel.

Start with comfortable clothes and secure footwear
Choose lightweight clothing that lets you sit comfortably in a canoe and move between the main boat and the smaller craft. Clothing may get damp from splashes, so a favourite outfit that needs to stay dry is better saved for another day. A light cover-up over swimwear gives you options without adding much to your bag.
Water shoes or sandals with straps are useful choices. Think about keeping your footing while boarding and keeping your shoes attached to your feet, rather than choosing footwear only for a photograph. Follow the crew’s instructions at each transfer and wait until they tell you it is time to step across. Your professional paddler handles the canoe during the guided sections; previous paddling experience is not required.
Pack sun protection and a dry change
Bring sunscreen and a hat for time outside. A lightweight long-sleeved layer can also be useful when you want more coverage. Keep these items somewhere you can reach while on the main boat, rather than burying them under everything else. If your hat is loose, put it away when the breeze picks up.
A dry change of clothes makes the later part of the day more comfortable, particularly if you choose to swim. Keep it separately protected from wet swimwear. A small towel is a sensible personal item if you expect to get in the water. Pack only what you will use: a change of top and bottoms usually takes less room than several outfit options.
- Light clothes you are comfortable getting wet, plus swimwear if wanted.
- Water shoes or sandals with secure straps.
- Sunscreen, a hat and an optional light covering layer.
- Dry clothes and a separate bag for wet items.
Protect your phone before getting into a canoe
The bay offers plenty to photograph, but a phone needs protection around water. Bring a suitable waterproof phone case and check its closure before the trip. A case is only useful when it is properly sealed; avoid opening it while the canoe is moving or while boarding. Keep equipment compact enough that it does not interfere with your position in the canoe.
Dry bags are provided on the tour. Ask the crew how to close and use yours, and do not assume an open bag protects the contents. Keep essential items organised so you do not have to unpack everything to find your phone. Leave unnecessary valuables at your accommodation. If you bring a camera, use protection appropriate to that equipment and be prepared to put it away when the paddler needs your attention.
Take photographs from a stable seated position and follow instructions near rock passages. There will be moments when watching where you are going matters more than taking a picture. Sunset colours and the visibility of natural plankton light vary; neither should be treated as a guaranteed photograph. Our plankton guide explains what to expect after dark.

Decide whether you want to swim
Swimming is optional. You can enjoy the guided canoe experience without planning to swim, so do not pack swim gear simply because you think everybody must enter the water. If you do want to swim, bring your own swimwear and listen to the crew’s instructions about where and when it is appropriate. The day’s arrangements depend on conditions.
Keep wet items together afterwards so your dry clothes and phone protection stay useful for the evening. If anyone in your party is unsure about getting into the canoe or taking part in a particular activity, contact the team before booking. Describe the practical concern clearly so the team can explain the arrangements; a packing list cannot determine whether the trip is suitable for an individual guest.

Check what the tour already provides
The Evening Glow package includes guided canoeing, safety equipment, two Thai meals, drinks and snacks as described in the itinerary. Standard Phuket hotel transfers and national park fees are also included. You do not need to bring your own paddle or arrange a separate canoe rental for the guided stops.
Tell the team about dietary requirements before the trip rather than waiting until a meal is served. If you need a particular personal item or food, discuss that requirement in advance instead of assuming it will be available aboard. Check the current package and frequently asked questions when planning, because an inclusion on one tour should not be assumed to apply to a different operator or package.
Make a final check before hotel pickup
Charge your phone, save your booking details and confirm the pickup instructions. Put on your practical footwear before leaving the room and keep your day bag small enough to carry comfortably. The tour continues into the evening, so plan what you will want for the return transfer as well as what you need in the midday sun.
Before the first canoe outing, ask any remaining questions about your belongings and listen to the safety briefing. A few minutes spent arranging your bag on the main boat can make the rest of the day easier. Once you are seated and ready, you can give more attention to the limestone scenery, the water and the guide’s explanations.
